Every FIFA World Cup has its own unforgettable moments, surprises, and inspiring stories. Football is about passion, competition, and the battle to win, but it is also about the human stories behind the players. These stories remind us that dreams can come true in the most unexpected ways.
One of those incredible and even surprising stories comes from Cape Verde, the small African island nation that many people never expected to see competing with the world’s best. Few believed they could make history, yet their determination, courage, and team spirit helped them reach the knockout stage after facing football giants like Spain. They showed the world that no dream is too big when you believe and work for it.
Among the heroes of this remarkable journey is Roberto Lopes, whose path to the World Cup is unlike any other.
The 33-year-old Shamrock Rovers defender received his invitation to represent Cape Verde in a very unique and unexpected way through a simple LinkedIn message sent by then-head coach Rui Águas in 2019. Born in Ireland and having represented the Republic of Ireland at under-19 level, Lopes never imagined that a professional networking platform could change his football career forever.
At first, he ignored the message.
“I thought it was spam,” he told BBC Sport Africa, as he didn’t speak Portuguese and the message was written in Portuguese.
Nine months later, after Águas continued reaching out, Lopes finally replied.
“I was buzzing. I said, of course, 100% I would love to be part of the team.”
His football journey has never followed the traditional path. From working as a banker in a suit to stepping onto the football field, Lopes did not make his professional debut until the age of 24, and he earned his first international cap at 28. Since making his Cape Verde debut in 2019, he has become one of the team’s most reliable defenders and played a crucial role in their historic run to the quarter-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Now, Roberto Lopes and the Blue Sharks are living another dream on football’s biggest stage at the FIFA World Cup 2026.
His story is proof that life can change with one unexpected opportunity. Sometimes, all it takes is believing in yourself…
Sometimes, one message can change your life.
And sometimes, that message arrives on LinkedIn.
